Wideband CDMA systems are promising candidates for third generation mobile communication systems andInternational Mobile Telecommunications 2000 (IMT-2000). IMT-2000 has a global access capability whichcan realize seamless global services, such as multimedia, global roaming and fixed-wireless convergence.For example, a fixed-wireless access network with IMT-2000 has sufficient capabilities to replace currenttelephone networks. We have developed a wideband code division multiple access (wideband CDMA) testbedsystem for the purpose of verification of the capability of IMT-2000. This testbed system was manufactured toexamine not only each component technology of the wideband CDMA but also its systematic operation likecall control, variable rate during high speed data call, handover, etc. This paper describes the performance ofthe testbed from the results of laboratory experiments and field experiments. We report the specifications,configurations and performance of the testbed system, receiver performance for both a RAKE receiver andtransmission power control (TPC), and soft handover (SHO) performance regarding SHO probabilities.
