This paper introduces an alternative tensioning system for Spar top tensioned risers. This novelrnscheme of attaching risers to the Spar hull provides an alternative to the use of buoyancy cans,rntraditionally used for tensioning the risers. In scheme presented within, all the risers arernsupported on a common table type structure. The table structure is supported on several motionrncompensators at the top of the Spar hull. The motion compensators are designed to provide therndesired vertical and rotational stiffness to the riser-table system that is required to reduce the Sparrnmotion induced tensions in the risers.rnThe proposed system is believed, for some situations, to be a lower cost alternative to thernpresently used buoyancy cans. The new system also has short stroke and thus requires lessrnvertical space for the trees and a reduced requirement for the flexible jumpers. Riser interferencernconcerns are reduced due to limited stroke of the risers. The riser keel joints are also simplifiedrndue to the reduced stroke. All of the mechanical items are above the water surface simplifyingrnmaintenance and repair. Installation of the riser motion compensation system should be simplerrnthan those required for the present buoyancy can system. The new system has several otherrnpossible advantages such as no special drilling and workover tensioning requirements, andrnreduced pitch response of the Spar.rnThe paper will present an overview of the new concept and discuss advantages and disadvantagesrnof the system compared to existing tensioning systems. Details of the motion compensators andrnother components will also be presented. The proposed system integrates the risers to the Sparrnand thus is a truly coupled system. The response of Spar, risers and motion compensators has tornbe predicted together, since they have influence on each other. Results of global performancernanalysis will be presented focusing on the effect of coupling of risers and motion compensatorsrnon the Spar response. Riser strength, fatigue and interference response will also be presented.
