Emerging silicon photonic devices such as optical fibers and switches bear significant promise to improve communication efficiency of future systems. However, using these new devices as simple drop-in replacements of existing electronic or photonic components may leave significant gains on the table. In this paper, we discuss how we can use emerging photonic switches inside and outside of nodes to increase network and node reconfigurability to better match network resources to traffic and thus increase resource utilization. We then discuss some challenges towards realizing this end goal. This includes the need to generate high-level metrics from small-scale experiments in order to quantify the impact of new silicon photonic technologies at the system scale, and thus better guide architecture and silicon photonic research.
