The best analytical process to resolve the dynamic stress in rotating machinery has not yet been established. This is largely due to the different classes of the fluid induced vibration that exist today. This reported effort establishes a sound methodology to resolve fluid induced stresses that occur at resonant frequencies. The proposed process incorporates the use of transient sliding mesh computational fluid dynamics and forced frequency response finite element analysis. Details of the new process are provided along with any perceived limitations. There are 2 detailed case studies that are provided. The results obtained are validated with experimental impeller strain gauge data that was obtained during a full-load hydrocarbon test program. These case studies also provide good insight into the role volutes play on the dynamic stress of impellers.
