Incline Village Condition Assessment of the Reclaimed Water Pipeline

A corrosion investigation was made on 35.4 kilometers (km) (22 miles) of pipeline carrying reclaimed water after 32 years of service near Incline Village, California. The pipe was excavated in five locations and samples were cut from the pipeline for testing. Methods used in the investigation include soil resistivity analysis, laboratory soil analysis, ultrasonic thickness measurements and mechanical testing of steel samples removed from the pipeline, alkalinity and pH testing of cement mortar lining of pipe samples, and a closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection. The investigation concluded that the pipe damage was mostly due to third party construction. The steel met the material design requirements. High chlorides and sulfates led to corrosion of the exterior of the pipeline in some locations. This paper presents the findings and conclusions of the study.
