The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is a wholesale supplier that supplies treated water to one million people in four counties on the northern and eastern boundaries of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The communities of McKinney, Frisco, Little Elm and Prosper are in the NTMWD's north sub-system. The growth rate for these communities has skyrocketed in recent years necessitating an expansion of the treated water delivery system. The Frisco-McKinney Pipeline is an $18 million project currently under construction that will provide water to these communities. The pipeline project includes four miles of 60" (152 cm) and nine miles of 48" (122 cm) pipe to serve six new delivery points in the NTMWD system. The pipeline project was divided into three contracts to condense the construction schedule. Polyurethane coated steel pipe was the low bid alternative for the 60" pipe while bar-wrapped pipe was low for the 48" pipeline sections. The paper presents several problems and lessons learned encountered during the design and construction phase of the project, including the following: 1. Pro's and con's of locating the pipeline route in the ROW of a developing thoroughfare versus a private easement, 2. Writing polyurethane coating specifications that produce a better end product for your client 3. Design considerations for steel pipe 4. Weighing the costs and benefits of sub-surface utility engineering, and 5. Considerations for tunnel design.
