Today's flexible packaging films require high barrier performance coupled with high strength to prevent failure through burst, tears or environmental failures through water vapor or oxygen permeation. High performance nanocomposite biopolymer films incorporating nanocellulose are newly developing technologies for total barrier proofing from grease and oil to water / gas vapor transport. These new polymers when combined with other materials are able to create vapor and gas barriers that also are safe and environmentally friendly. This presentation will begin to show these primary properties incorporated within films that lend themselves to utilize traditional paper manufacturing techniques that will lead to future products that could match current fossil-based packaging films barrier and strength properties.
