This paper describes the successful use of the updated TopWave LayerGauge for rapidly determining the thickness of individual layers and the cross-web and machine direction thickness profiles. The results are interfaced with SQC programs or spreadsheets to provide data suitable for SQM and ISO 9000 applications.After generations of so-so quality in many products from the US, we have finally woken up to the fact that we are in a global market place and must make products that can effectively compete against the best that the rest of the world can offer. The film and sheet industries are a good example. Here US companies such as WR Grace's Cryovac Division, American National Can, Bemis Company and Printpack have had a decided edge in developing and supplying films that solve specific market needs such as protection against oxidative deterioration. This has been done through an ability to combine multiple layers, each of which contributes to solving the particular problem needs of the customer and his end product.Having developed these sophisticated multi-layered products does not automatically give the film producer an open market. Competition is always out there and the stockholders or owners are forever pushing for greater profitability. The statistical quality control procedures are probably the best way to meet the competition head on and keep both customers and stockholders happy.
