Market forces encourage the increased use of coextruded flexible packaging materials at the expense of monolayer films and other alternative structures. This paper examines some ways in which modern control systems play a major role in risk reduction when expanding coextrusion capabilities. A control system becomes the common currency which allows strategic partnering to occur between film producers and their machinery and resin suppliers. An argument is presented for using a distributed system for controlling all facets of the operation of a line. Cost justifications are suggested for typical systems now in service.
