Polysaccharide Chemistry: Frontiers and Challenges

Polysaccharide chemistry is at a watershed moment. We have seen once-vigorous areas of science and industry decline, such as textile and paper chemistry. Yet, simultaneously, vast new frontiers are opening before us, because of the increasing demand for and decreasing supply of petroleum, and the growing appreciation for the enormous flexibility and information content of polysaccharides. The emerging biorefinery-based economy offers almost unlimited potential for contributions from polysaccharide chemists, in order to solve difficult problems associated with the conversion of biomass into biofuels and biomaterials. It would be difficult to imagine a field with more potential for global impact. At the same time, polysaccharide scientists are challenged to solve long standing scientific problems that could aid in meeting these critical global challenges, including the determination of fine structure, controlled synthesis, and elucidation of detailed structure-property relationships for polysaccharides and derivatives. Here I present a viewpoint on the state of the art, and the major challenges ahead for polysaccharide chemistry.
