摘要

Flame retarded plastic materials are playing an important role in our society. These are applied in the case, where it is required to protect people and property against damage from fire. A great number of different flame retardants exist, which possess different modes of actions (radical mechanism, char forming/ intumescence, endothermic reactions). Which class of flame retardant should be used in a particular application is dependent on the desired resistance against fire and on the class of polymer that has to be protected. Critical is the interruption or hindrance of the cycle of the burning process in at least one step.
