The properties of cold work tool steels can be optimized by varying the distribution, type, size, amount and hardness of the hard phase appearing in the martensitic matrix. Thus, different property profiles can be provided by changing the chemical composition and the manufacturing process. For a specific powder pressing application and the expected series length various powder metallurgical and spray formed tool steels can be used to increase the robustness of the powder pressing process as well as a reduction of the lead time, maintenance cost and the total economy. This paper presents the properties of some new tool steels and results from industrial applications.
