Cast irons and steels have hardness ranges from 150 up to 600 HV for quite soft grey irons to wear resistant white irons from hardness. The harder is the material, the more brittle it usually gets and more difficult it is to produce without cracking. Coatings have long been commonly recognized as a solution integrating a wear resistant surface and ductile body of the cast part. TiC composites are one recognised wear resistant coating material.rnOne TiC production method studied for several decades is self propagating high temperature synthesis SHS. In SHS an exothermic reaction is ignited and the heat from the reaction makes it self sustaining.
