According to recent economic reports, the worst of East Asia’s economic crisis appears tornbe over. For example, Thailand’s real gross domestic product (GDP) grew only 1% inrn2001. Yet longer-term growth rates beyond 2002 are projected in the range of 4% to 5%.rnMalaysia, which experienced a 7.5% decline in real GDP in 1998, reported an increase ofrn5.6% in 1999 and 7.5% in 2000. Thus, the region is once again poised for betterrneconomic times, with its need for adequate and reliable power also expected to growrnstrongly in the long term.rnDespite positive economic gains in the last two to three years and an increasing need forrnelectricity, East Asian governments find themselves strapped for cash and forced to delayrninfrastructure projects, especially the building of centralized, large capacity generation.rnLimited financing alternatives also prevent significant long-term planning for newrngeneration. For example, Malaysia’s US$5.5 billion, 2.4-GW Bakun hydroelectric projectrnhas been on hold since September 1997. In Indonesia, Hopewell Holdings cancelled itsrn1,320-MW Tanjung Jati-B power plant. Consequently, small gas turbines installed inrnblocks to generate power in the 30- to 300- MW range are attractive alternatives offeringrnthe versatility and adaptability required in this market. These more affordable, quicklyrninstalled units hold down operation and maintenance expenses and overall labor costs,rnresulting in increased profitability and competitive advantage.rnThis paper addresses the following topics:rn1. an overview of the current East Asian market conditions that make smaller gasrnturbine installations increasingly attractive. This discussion focuses on Indonesia,rnMalaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam;rn2. market conditions in this region that result in demand for innovative technology ; andrn3. new technology solutions provided by the next-generation development of a provenrngas turbine-the FT8 Plus.
