Carbon management can close a big gap in the aim of reducing CO_2 emissions by applying CO_2rnstorage and CO_2 storage in power plants while costs can be still lower than when usingrnregenerative energy sources. CO_2 can bei captured from the flue gas, after combustion in oxygenrnand recirculated flue gas or from a synthesis gas before combustion. Storage capacities seem tornbe availabe at large amounts underground. The required technology is available today, however arncertain efficiency reduction has to be considered. Also the potential CO_2 storage is accessible. Asrna long term development objective proposals have been made which give a solution base for therndevelopment of a CO_2-emission free power plant of at least the same efficiency as one withoutrncarbon management.rnWith present technology the measures of CO_2 storage and storage cause a efficiency reduction ofrn7 to 11 percentage points and a respective increase in energy consumption of around 15 to 25rnpercent in the best case. Electricity generating costs will increase by at least 50 percent. Includingrnstorage the CO_2 avoidance costs are in the range of 30 to 60 € per t of CO_2. Large scalernapplication in the power sector has not yet been shown.
