Nowadays, distributed generation is mainly based on internal combustion engines, but newrntechnologies are expected to spread in the future, i.e. micro gas turbines in the short term andrnfuel cells in medium/long term, both in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) configuration,rnthanks to reductions in their investment costs and increases in their energy conversionrnefficiency.rnIn order to assess the actual potential of the mentioned systems to penetrate in the electricityrnmarket, Enel-Ricerca installed two of them, respectively based on a micro gas turbine and onrna fuel cell, in its own Lab located in Leghorn, to test them in the entire range of operatingrnconditions.rnExperimental results of the extensive research program carried out to evaluate theirrnperformances and their environmental impact are described and discussed in the paper.
