Foster Wheeler has developed an innovative approach that provides real-time coal flow,rnparticle velocity and fineness results in combination with airflow measurement. Theserntechnologies have been combined in an automated control system to match secondary air andrnfuel flow at the burners. This “Fuel Injection” (FI) approach provides additional performancernbenefits for ultra low NO_x firing system applications.rnOne of the first applications of the FI technology as part of a low NO_x system retrofit werernlarge tangential-fired units. The results repeatedly show a substantial NO_x and CO reductionrnand oxygen profile improvements when the secondary air and fuel flow control system isrnactive. Other units are being retrofit with low NO_x systems that include this new “fuelrninjection” technology approach. This paper will present results of emission reductions andrnboiler performance improvements from these unique installations.
