Control Modernization and improvement of the control system is a must for powerrnplants in operation for more than 15 years in order to reduce their operation andrnmaintenance costs, to improve their performances, to extend their service lifetime, tornincrease their flexibility, reliability and safety.rnTo meet these objectives, a complete re-engineering is the best approach to benefitrnfrom smart options and to obtain the optimum manpower to operate the plant. Arncomplete re-engineering is much more than a basic replacement of existing equipmentrnwith up-to-date technology : it is a guarantee for the best performances and it ensuresrnthe highest recurrent cost savings.rnTractebel Engineering – part of the energy arm of SUEZ – has developed a specificrnproject methodology applicable for all types of DCS so as to guarantee the requiredrnperformances of the renewed control system as well as the time schedule and thernbudget of the project. This methodology was applied with success on more than 15rncontrol system renovation projects of fossil-fired and hydro power plants in Belgiumrnand abroad.rn2rnThe paper describes the methodology, the tools and the preparation phase of the worksrnto reduce plant outage to a minimum. It presents also the benefits of such a reengineeringrnin terms of O&M costs, availability and solutions focused on the future.rnThis approach is illustrated by project showcases in Belgium and in Eastern Europern(Hungary), performed in close partnership with Electrabel, one of the main players inrnthe electricity sector in Europe.
