The electricity markets around the world have driven the development of separate GasrnTurbine and Steam Turbine Power Plants as well as Combined Cycle Plants in recent years.rnAside from efficiency optimisation and cost reduction, the two factors operating flexibilityrnand fuel availability protection have increasingly come to the fore of power station owners.rnThey are facing a more and more unpredictable market for selling their electricity and thernprimary energy market due in particular to changing price levels for fossil fuels such as oil,rncoal and natural gas and LNG.rnToday the next competition target, the market for CO_2 certificates, will give owners anrnadditional challenge.rnAll this drives the power station development and the owners need to become as flexible asrnpossible in order to generate the best possible profit out of their power plant capitalrninvestment.rnGenerally, it is impossible to predict the most economic operation of the power plantrnthroughout its entire working life. Therefore it is wise to design for operational flexibility.rnWhen applicable the inclusion of an automatic synchronising clutch in the shaft train canrnprovide greater turbine operating flexibility and thus a better return on capital invested andrnprotection against power market changes.rnThe paper enlightens three typical turbine plant clutch applications from the 40 years ofrnturbine fleet operation experience.
