With the need for power reliability eclipsing power quality,rnan old technology emerges as the solution. Flywheels have been a part ofrneconomic development for centuries. Today the kinetic energy storingrnflywheel combines with modern electronics going high speed, operating in arnvacuum and eliminating bearings. Each of these elements materiallyrnincreases reliability above 8 to 9 nines as the flywheel replaces or augmentsrnbatteries for "ride through" with a UPS. This high speed flywheel with 20rnseconds ride through was born in the automobile that required severe andrnheavy regulations for this application. Consequently all of the refinementsrnnecessary for a moving vehicle are transferred to this stationary industrialrnapplication. This positive impact on reliability enhances performance andrnresults in ultra – low maintainability. This presentation demonstrates thernperformance and capabilities of a hermetically sealed, 60,000 rpm carbonrncomposite flywheel producing 120kW for 20 seconds and is cost effective.rnReliability manifests itself in a flywheel that does not require servicing forrn15 years or 131,400 hours of continuous operation.
