Fluorescent penetrant inspection uses suspended dyes in a liquid to locate surface flaws throughout many industries. To assure the quality of a penetrant and that the inspection is reliable, daily checks are crucial to the effectiveness of this inspection process. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifies quality control checks within their documents. Some of these requirements are visual examination, water washability test, and viscosity measurements. A test matrix was designed to determine the effects of certain contaminations have on penetrant performance. The results indicate that certain contaminants may have an effect on the viscosity of the penetrant and may also alter the penetrant's washability.
