The AC Field Measurement Technique has been in use for over 20 years, almost exclusively targeting detection and sizing of fatigue cracks in welded steel structures by hand. For these applications, analog electronics are easily fast enough to cope with the amount of data involved. Also, for the defect sizes and test frequencies involved, simple coil sensors have enough resolution.Recently, there has been interest in extending the application of ACFM for high speed inspections using sensors mounted on trains or pipeline inspection PIGs. Also, the use of GMR sensors instead of coils is being studied to improve sensitivity to small and/or closely-spaced defects.This paper presents some results from research studies on inspection at 80 mph, and on detection of creep damage 0.004 in. deep.
