The ability to continuously monitor structural health would significantly increase safety and decrease maintenance and inspection costs of civil and industrial structures. Continuous health monitoring would transition calendar based maintenance to indicator-driven or condition-based maintenance. The feature of wireless sensors and networks offers a unique capability to NDE systems for continuous health monitoring. Piezoelectric transducers would be fixed in predetermined locations on critical components; each transducer would be interfaced to a smart sensor node which has computation, storage, and communication capabilities using a limited energy source. This paper introduces an active sensing board extension for the commercial Iris sensor node (mote) that interfaces with piezoelectric active sensors for the identification of anomalous events using ultrasonic techniques. Multiple motes are mounted on a structure and controlled by a base station for activating ultrasonic inspections. Ultrasonic measurements collected by the motes are communicated to the base station, where signal processing algorithms are used to indicate the presence of damage and characterize the severity of damage in the structure. Initial results of the proposed system will be presented.
