Most cast iron, ductile iron and steel pipelines globally are at or nearing their design life. Leaks and breaks are daily occurrences and often lead to property damage, injuries and sometimes in loss of life. Statistics show that the world average leakage rate of treated, potable water is over 30%. Yes, one-third of all the water we filter, chlorinate, fluoridate and pump never reaches the customers. Why - mainly due to leakage at joints and through corroded areas.The primary responsibility of asset managers is to reduce the risk of failure of their aging pipeline infrastructure. An important consideration is to know the pipeline integrity by proactively performing preventive maintenance activities (direct condition assessment - DCA) using advanced electromagnetic in-line inspections (ILI) technologies.The strengths and capabilities of DCA activities using advanced high resolution ILI tools (also known as "smart pigs") are:1.Determine the remaining wall thickness of a pipeline from start to end.2.Inspection of the complete circumference of pipelines ranging in size from 3 in. to 30 in., including cast iron/ductile iron/steel pipelines.3.Detection of defects like: corrosion, pitting, erosion, cracks and graphitization.4.Measuring through cement mortar, polyethylene, scale and nodules up to 1 in. thick, without significantly affecting the quality of the data.5.The technique is equally sensitive to O.D. or I.D. wall loss.This paper discusses the basic principles of the technology, its deliverables and describes several case studies where it has been successfully used to do DCA of raw water, potable water and waste water pipelines.
