Traditional bus service is the dominant transportation mode of a majority of residents of many large metropolitan areas. Very little attention has been paid to the spatial nature and uncertainty of human cognition in determining a satisfactory bus travel plan. The distinctive characteristic of the tool proposed in this paper is the incorporation of bus users' decision-making process in their search for an appropriate bus transit travel plan. First, a two-level data model for bus transit network is used to accommodate the hierarchical nature of travelers' information processing and decision making process. Second, the interaction of users with the tool is designed to follow the spatial and individual thinking of bus travelers in a more intuitive way. We provide a flexible way for a user to set travel plan priorities on the degree of comfort/dissatisfaction with walking, crossing a street, and multiple transfers between bus routes. Third, we adopt an iterative analysis method for deriving multiple optional bus transit travel plans according to comparable transfer/walking impedance measurements. Each travel plan with detailed information on transfer and travel impedances is presented by means of user-friendly tabular and map formats. A prototype of the decision-support tool is implemented and experimented on the platform of ArcGIS. The paper concludes with some suggestions on possible extensions of this research.
