A web-based prompted recall interview platform for passive GPS-based household travel survey (HTS) was introduced, which was developed through the integration of ASP.NET, an Ajax UI frame called ExtJS, and Google Map API. The system functionality includes user self-administrated GPS data uploading, trip visualization, and interactive trip revision and attribution, web database management, automated data cleaning, trip-stop detection, and trajectory simplification,. GPS-based travel data of up to six days and relevant personal data were collected from a group of residents in Shanghai to investigate the feasibility of using the web-based prompted recall approach to assist GPS-based HTS in a metropolis environment, which is typically characterized by such poor GPS survey conditions as urban canyon effects, high population density, severe traffic congestions, and diverse transportation modes. A data thinning solution was also experimented for efficient trip route visualization. The preliminary results indicated that this platform was able to improve trip recall accuracy with a heuristic, friendly, and geospatially visualized interface for survey respondents, while the specific algorithm design could tolerate greater errors in trip recall and attribution. The low demand for recall precision and the relaxing interview environment led to a salient reduction of the physical and mental burden of respondents.
