It was proved that sod-mulching system is an effective measure for orchard soil management in the arid and semiarid areas in China. In comparison with control, the sod-mulching system significantly improved soil fertility, with organic substance, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and potassium being increased by 4.1-4.7g/kg (47-54%), 0.05-0.08g/kg (7.0-12%), 3.5-6.2mg/kg (20-35%), and 27-75mg/kg (9.0-25%), respectively. At the same time, it obviously improved fruit quality, increasing soluble solids level, flesh firmness, sugar content and sugar-acid ratio, markedly decreasing the titratable acid.Moreover, the sod-mulching system helped the apple trees to give 12.73-31.75% of yield and 15.17-36.2% of economic benefits more than the control.
