Reliability inspections of metallic structures for fatigue cracks are traditionally conducted at equispaced intervals derived from long crack growth behavior.This study examines the common case where fatigue cracks nucleate continually over time and spend a majority of the life as microcracks.In such instances equispaced inspections can be inadequate for limiting the risk of failure before the next inspection.As a result,a formalism which provides a different strategy for reliability inspections based on microcrack growth and distributions is introduced here.This model provides information on the emergence of critical cracks from the cicrocrack population to more effectively schedule the inspections.
