This paper briefly reviews the two main approaches to the problem of fatigue at notches.The crack propagation method,examined by the author and Professor K.J.Miller over twenty five years ago,is appropriate for relatively short fatigue lives.Methods based on notch root strain serve better when initiation of a crack dominates the overall life.The importance of size-scale,stress analysis and service load measurements is emphasised.
