Fatigue limits are classified into three regimes, the first of which corresponds to the conventional fatigue limit of a material while the third regime is related to the threshold value as determined from LEFM type tests; the second region is the transition regime. From this basis the fatigue limits of materials containing small defects (<1 mm) are assessed by invoking the material resistance (R-curve) concept. The results are compared with other methods of assessment for the benefit of designers who have to evaluate the structural integrity of materials containing stress concentrations.
