It is well established that the presence of an anodised film on aluminium alloys can be detrimental to their fatigue performance.This is generally attributed to initiation effects associated with cracks in the oxide layer.What is less clear,however,is the effect such a film has on the propagation behaviour of an already initiated and growing fatigue crack.This paper reports the findings of fatigue crack growth experiments carried out on an anodised 2014:T4 aluminium alloy.The results obtained demonstrate that fatigue crack growth rates in aluminium alloys can be markedly enhanced by the presence of a thin oxide film.
