Numerical analysis shows that strip crown and shape are not always achieved in the early and late stands of the hot mill, respectively, according to commonly adopted theory. On the contrary, flatness defects can propagate from the early stands through the exit of the finishing mill. Concurrently, the effect of the early stands on the final strip crown can be small in comparison to the effect exerted on the crown by the later stands. The current analysis was performed by simulating shape and crown formation in the finishing mill stands using an enhanced model of roll stack deformations. The model takes advantage of a new method developed to calculate the distribution of specific roll forces along the transverse direction in the roll bite. Flatness buckling criteria have been developed that better define strip shape behavior in the finishing stands. It was established that the last three finishing stands have a dominant effect on the hot band crown, while for best results, shape correction must be performed in all finishing stands.
