For safety-relevant distributed systems a reliable communication system is a necessity where message losses can be detected by an acknowledgement technique and processed by retransmission. In this paper we propose and evaluate two different efficient algorithms for message acknowledgement and retransmission. The algorithms cause particularly low overhead when applied to a bus communication system. The first algorithm requires special hardware whereas the second doesn??t. The second algorithm can be implemented efficiently by software for communication systems that periodically switch between time-triggered and event-triggered transmission, such as FlexRay.
