A Study on the Influence of Water Layer on the Seismic Response of Immersed Tunnel

Immersed tunnel is widely adopted in underwater transportation system. According to literature reviews and current studies, no experiments for the influence of water layer on the dynamic behavior of immersed tunnel under seismic loading have been reported. In order to solve this problem, a series of shaking table tests were conducted in this study. Two groups of tests are designed. One is the immersed tunnel model in saturated sand, the other one is the immersed tunnel in saturated sand under a water layer. This study highlights the experimental results composed of the excess pore pressure of soil layer, the acceleration of runnel model, and the peak dynamic strain of tunnel model. These results indicate that for vertical earthquake loading, the water layer influences little on the seismic behavior of soil. Three is no apparent difference between pore pressure of saturated sand and saturated sand under a water layer. However, the water layer significantly affects the dynamic response of the tunnel model. The dynamic strain of the tunnel model located in saturated ground under the water layer is larger than that in saturated ground.
