This study was conducted in Kuang area, SouthrnSumatra Basin, where three oil fields: Air Serdang,rnMandala, and Kuang are situated. The Kuang area isrnsurrounded by five sub basins (Cintamani, Jantung,rnTanjung Miring, Meraksa, and Lematang).rnTalangakar Formation has been known as a sourcernrock in the area, however the characteristics of thernformation is different in each sub basin. It is thereforernnecessary to find out the most possible sub basin(s)rnthat may be the source of hydrocarbons.rnForty two sediment (cuttings) and fifteen crude oilrnsamples have been geochemically analyzed. Thernbasic source rock analysis comprised of screening,rnkerogen typing, and maturation. Further analysis,rnsuch as correlation between source rock and crude oilrnas well as crude oil to crude oil, has been done byrnusing more sophisticated techniques, i.e. carbonrnisotope and biomarkers.rnBased on the geochemistry analysis above, it isrnindicated that:rn1. Characteristics of the Lemat and TalangakarrnFormations in Tanjung Miring and CintamanirnSubbasins basically show a fluvio-deltaicrncharacters with a slight different: more oxic inrnCintamani rather than in Tanjung MiringrnSubbasin.rn2. Source rocks of Lemat and TalangakarrnFormations in Lematang Subbasin arerninterpreted to have shallow marine characters.rn3. Crude oils in Kuang area shows the fluviodeltaicrncharacteristic.rnThe result of correlation shows that crude oils inrnKuang area were most probably derived from sourcernrocks of the Lemat and Talangakar Formations inrnTanjung Miring Subbasin.
