Naphthenic acids (NAs) are cycloaliphatic compoundsrnthat contribute to the toxicity of oil sands process affectedrnwater (OSPW). These compounds are persistent in thernEnvironment. Cyclohexanoic acid (CHA) was selected asrna simple model naphthenic acid to investigate itsrnoxidation using ozone (O_3), and advanced oxidationrnprocesses (AOP): ultraviolet light (UV) in the presence ofrnhydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2). Both treatments showed to bernefficient for degrading the CHA; however somernbyproducts formed during the treatment which needs to bernconsidered for longer processes. In UV/H_2O_2 system, pHrndid not show any significant effect on the degradation, norrnon the byproducts formation. However, higher pH inrnozonation system seemed to increase the efficiency of therntreatment.
