Currently there are several commonly used internet information retrieval protocols, such as Wais, World Wide Web (WWW or W3) and Gopher. Each of them provides certain capabilities to allow users to servers to find the required information. Z39.50 is an ANSI information retrieval standard, which provides many useful features not included in any of the above mentioned internet protocols. This document intends to introduce the basic services and features of the Z39.50 standard and briefly discusses the possible applications of such a standard.
