In the framework of the GOCE-Italy project a solutionrnto improve at local level a global model using therndelivered GOCE data has been studied and tested.rnThe combination is based on a collocation procedurernconsidering as observations the spherical harmonicrncoefficients with their predicted error variances and arnlocal grid of the second radial derivative of therngravitational potential; this grid is estimated from GOCErnobservations at satellite level by using the space-wisernapproach. The use of local data, instead of the availablernglobal grids, gives the possibility to consider thernfull error covariance matrix of the gridded data intornthe collocation combination; this covariance matrix isrncomputed by Montecarlo simulations.rnThe method has been applied for the update of thernMediterranean geoid computed from the EGM08 modelrnat a resolution of 5’×5’ in the area between 28°N - 46°Nrnand 10°E - 37°W. The geoid corrections have an rms ofrnless than 1 cm, that increases to some cm over specificrnareas (e.g. Alps, Aegean plate, Cyprus). Regarding therncorrections of the global model coefficients, they arernconcentrated in the degrees from 70 to 220.rnThese corrections are quite small, probably due tornthe very good quality of the EGM08 model in Europernand to the fact that only the first two months of GOCErndata have been used. A more significant impact isrnexpected when considering a longer data period andrnwhen the method is applied in areas where only poor orrninadequate ground gravity data are available.
