The Mediterranean Sea is a semi-enclosed true ocean.rnRecent Mediterranean circulation and sea level studiesrnusing various observations and ocean general circulationrnmodels show good coherence and agreement. Thernsatellite altimetry and tide gauge observed and modelrnpredicted sea level show good coherent with correlationrncoefficient of 0.6. The barotropic pressure responsernaccounts for about 66% of the Mediterranean sea levelrnrise (1948-2001). The estimated sea level trend (1.54 ±rn0.75 mm/yr) using decadal altimetry (1985-2001) afterrncorrecting the interannual/decadal signals reconstructedrnusing tide gauge data, agrees well with the long termrntrend (1948-2001) estimated using tide gauges (1.43 ±rn0.09 mm/yr) in the Mediterranean Sea, and is in betterrnagreement than before with the global long-term searnlevel trend (1.7 – 1.8 mm/yr). Simulation studiesrnindicate that the time-varying mass variations ofrnMediterranean Sea likely are sensitive to GOCE at thernfew mE?tv?s level.rnOne of GOCE's primary high-level data products is thernglobal gravity model with anticipated geoid accuracy ofrn1 cm RMS and a spatial resolution of 130 km or longer.rnActually, the International Centre for Global EarthrnModels (ICGEM) distributes some GOCE's GlobalrnGravity field Models (GGMs) likernGO_CONS_GCF_2_DIR (Bruinsma et al, 2010),rnGO_CONS_GCF_2_TIM (Pail et al, 2010a),rnGO_CONS_GCF_2_SPW (Migliaccio et al, 2010),rnGOCO01S (Pail et al, 2010b).rnThe work focuses on the comparison between thesernGOCE's GGMs, EGM2008 and EIGEN-51C, with searngravity anomalies and geoid undulations provided byrnexisting local and regional geoids – like IBERGEOrn(Sevilla, 2008), IGG (Corchete et al, 2005), etc. - in thernWestern Mediterranean Sea in order to find the GGMrnthat best fits this area.rnWe also try to estimate how the GOCE geoid data,rnprovided by ESA, works on the Western MediterraneanrnSea in order to prepare future geomatic issues.
