We present a first result for the global mean geostrophicrncurrents derived from a merged solution of altimetricrnsatellites (T/P, Jason 1/2, ERS-1/2, GEOSAT) and therngeoid estimated from the first 61-day cycle of thernGOCE mission. This result is compared with thatrnobtained based on a GRACE-induced mean geoid, asrnwell as with mean circulation patterns estimated fromrnocean in-situ data from drifters and from modelrnsimulated data by the Global Circulation Model ECCO.rnThe results show that with only one cycle (the firstrnrelease)of GOCE data, the resolution of the geostrophicrncurrents from a satellite only Mean DynamicrnTopography (MDT) is remarkably improved, reachingrnamplitudes much closer to in-situ data than thoserncoming from a GRACE-induced MDT, and from ECCOrnmodel.
