@@ The Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus Hope, transmits the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus Steiner &-Buhrer, that causes pine wilt disease, resulting in an epidemic damage on pine forest. The annual loss of the pine wood was 580, 000 m3 in 2011, ca. 1/4 of the maximum loss 2,430,000 m3 recorded in 1979. The major methods to combat the problem consist of control of the beetle by insecticides, removal of infected pine trees, and control of the nematode by injection of nematicides to the tree trunk. Insecticide spray over pine forest by helicopter is the most efficient method currently available to control the beetle. Insecticide spray from high altitude, ca. 3 m and 15 m above the tree top with a radio-controlled and a regular helicopter, respectively, raises a concern for a possible health risk by drift on human population in the adjacent residential area.
