A Study of Winter Road Surface Measures at Airports in Cold, Snowy Regions

At airports in cold snowy regions, a decrease in the coefficient of friction on runway surfaces due to snow and ice creates conditions in which airplanes cannot land, leading to reduced convenience for users. Laboratory testing and test construction were conducted to study the applicability of high-performance SMA, which produces rough pavement surfaces, for improving the coefficient of friction on runways. The results indicated that the technique was effective in improving this coefficient when there was slush and/or ice film on the runway surface. Laboratory tests to evaluate freezing/thawing, durability and other factors specific to cold snowy regions also revealed that highperformance sMA displays a level of performance equal to or better than that of dense-graded asphalt concrete (20 F), which is a standard surface mixture for airports, and its use was confirmed effective as a winter surface measure for airport pavement.
