The TopSat camera is a low cost remote sensing imagerrncapable of producing 2.5 metre resolution panchromaticrnimagery, funded by the British National Space Centre’srnMosaic programme. An engineering modelrndevelopment programme verified optical alignmentrntechniques and crucially, demonstrated structuralrnstability through vibration tests. As a result of this, thernflight model camera has been assembled at the SpacernScience & Technology Department of CCLRC'srnRutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, inrnpreparation for launch in 2005.rnThe camera has been designed to be compact andrnlightweight so that it may be flown on a low costrnmini-satellite (~120kg launch mass). To achieve this,rnthe camera utilises an off-axis three mirror anastigmaticrn(TMA) system, which has the advantages of excellentrnimage quality over a wide field of view, combined withrna compactness that makes its overall dimensions smallerrnthan its focal length. Keeping the costs to a minimumrnhas been a major design driver in the development ofrnthis camera.rnThe camera is part of the TopSat mission, which is arncollaboration between four UK organisations; RALrn(Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), SSTL (SurreyrnSatellite Technology Ltd.), QinetiQ and Infoterra. Itsrnobjective is to demonstrate provision of rapid responsernhigh-resolution imagery to fixed and mobile groundrnstations using a low cost mini-satellite.rnThis paper describes the opto-mechanical design,rnassembly and alignment techniques implemented andrnreports on the test results obtained to date.
