The DARWIN mission is primarily devoted to therndetection of earth-like exoplanets and the spectroscopicrncharacterization of their atmospheres for key tracers ofrnlife. We will review the current instrumental concept,rnwhich is based on an interferometric array of six freeflyingrntelescopes, passively cooled to 40 K, operatingrnin the 6-18 micron wavelength range. The angularrnresolution of DARWIN can be matched to a broadrnvariety of observational scenarios by resizing the arrayrnbetween diameters of 50 m and 500 m. The flux of thernparent star, which normally would overwhelm thernplanetary signal, is suppressed by a factor of 10~6 byrndestructive interference (nulling) over the full opticalrnbandwidth, as the beams are combined. Then, thernplanetary signal can be separated from the zodiacalrnbackground signature by modulating the opticalrnresponse of the interferometer.rnESA is carrying out an extensive technologyrndevelopment programme to bring DARWIN-relatedrntechnology to a maturity level in the three key areas ofrnFormation Flying, Cryogenic Cooling andrnMechanisms, and Nulling Interferometry. We report onrnthe current status of optical development activitiesrnwithin this program, which includes the developmentrnof optical metrology, achromatic phase shifters,rnamplitude and polarization control devices, nullingrninterferometer demonstrators, mid-IR single-modernwaveguides and advanced waveguide coupling devices.
