Citizen science is a form of research collaboration thatrnactively involves the public in scientific research to addressrnreal-world problems. Research designed specifically forrnpublic participation is a form of information work for whichrnthe design of tasks and supporting technologies forrnvolunteers is critically important to the scientific outcomes.rnThis study examines the relationship between informationrnand communication technologies (ICTs) and workrnpractices, with the goal of generating insights to inform therndesign and management of cyberinfrastructure for citizenrnscience. Comparing three projects with similar volunteerrnparticipation activities but varied organizational structuresrnhighlighted the importance of project goals and resources inrnthe adoption of technologies, and strategies for using ICT tornsupport ongoing participation and quality assurance.
