Collaborative search is concerned with how people workrntogether to address a common information need. In thisrnpaper, we investigate two factors that may influencerncollaborative search behaviors: providing awarenessrninformation about collaborators’ prior activities, and thernorientation of the shared task. For awareness, we examinedrntwo levels: an aware condition in which participants couldrnsee their collaborators’ prior activity in the system, and arnnon-aware condition in which they could only see theirrnown history. For orientation, we investigated a task with anrnopen set of goals compared to a recall-oriented task thatrnasked participants to find as many relevant documents asrnpossible. Forty-one participants in a laboratory study used arnprototype system called ResultsSpace to complete anrnasynchronous collaborative search task with three simulatedrncollaborators. We developed a novel set of measures forrnexamining collaborative behavior, and found thatrnparticipants who were aware of their collaborators’ priorrnactions issued more query terms in common with theirrncollaborators and tended to avoid rating or viewingrndocuments that collaborators had already rated as comparedrnto the non-aware group. We also observed an interactionrnbetween awareness and task-orientation in terms of thernnumber of unique documents found, suggesting that taskrnorientation could change the direction of the effect ofrnawareness on document space exploration.
