Understanding What Personal Information Items Make Categorization Difficult

This study examined personal information items that arerndifficult to categorize, and how people deal with theserninformation items. For this research study, 18 participantsrnwere asked to keep a diary over a week and record diaryrnentries whenever they decided to save or organize anyrnelectronic personal information items. Then, two post-diaryrnsemi-structured interviews were conducted to ask questionsrnabout how they organized their information items and whyrnthey made such decisions based on the diary they kept.rnInterviews were analyzed by using a grounded theoryrnapproach. The results show that the information items thatrnare ambiguous or anomalous are difficult to categorize.rnParticipants dealt with ambiguous or anomalousrninformation items by categorizing them into one of theirrnexisting categories, placing them into a miscellaneousrncategory or revising the existing organizational structure.rnSince personal information items that are difficult torncategorize directly influence the time and effort needed tornorganize personal information, it is important to understandrnwhat kind of personal information items makes personalrninformation organization difficult. In particular, the resultsrnof this research study have practical implications inrndeveloping interfaces and applications that help organizingrnpersonal information items effectively. This study alsornhelps us further understand categorization, informationrnorganizing behavior, and personal informationrnmanagement.
