This poster reports preliminary results of a comparativernstudy of user searching in two large-scale digital librariesrnwith history focus in the United States: the federal-level andrnthe state-level digital library. Similarities were observed inrnsearch query lengths and average numbers of searchrncategories per search query. At the same time, the studyrnreveals significant differences in the level of use ofrnadvanced search options and in search query frequencies, asrnwell as in distribution of most search categories in userrnqueries. The empirical data obtained in this exploratoryrnstudy will inform further research and will be useful forrnprofessionals making decisions on resource description andrnuser interfaces for digital libraries.
