摘要

Informal scholarly communication across the Web is arngrowing component of the scholarly communicationrninfrastructure. This study describes the effects of threerndifferent interfaces on these informal channels. Interfacerndesign has a widely studied effect on user behavior, and newrnusers often encounter barriers during accessing social mediarntools. Using a mixed methods approach, we collected andrngrouped 413 posts across three distinct interfaces ofrnResearchGate’s communication platform. Our results showrnthat scholars were more polite in the initial group discussionrninterface but that user interface design did not change therncore communication patterns of sharing information andrnopinions among scholars. The site also transitioned fromrnone-to-many discussions to one-to-one posts, but new usersrnwere generally welcomed to the scholarly communications.
