This panel provides an overview of the adoption of threedimensionalrn(3D) technologies by librarians andrninformation scientists as tools for community engagement.rn3D technologies --scanning, printing, and design-- are somernof the latest technical innovations making inroads into thernlibrary and museum environments. After a briefrnintroduction on the technical aspects of 3D technologies,rnspecialists from academic and public libraries discuss theirrnexperience implementing 3D services, with a special focusrnon newly established partnerships. In addition, theyrncomment on the impact of the technologies on theirrninstitutions and communities. Empowering users to scan orrncreate 3D objects often results in a growing collection ofrn3D digital files. An information scientist discusses how tornmanage these collections to ensure preservation and fairrnintellectual property practices. Finally, a museumrnprofessional describes creative ways of using 3D objects tornenhance the museum experience and to expand therninteraction of the public with museum artifacts. Followingrnthe presentations, the panelists engage in public discussionrnof the challenges and opportunities of these transformativerntechnologies.
